How to prepare artwork for DTF and UV DTF transfers

Prepare a clear transfer-printing brief: finished size, transparent areas, text, file versions and approval checks for DTF or UV DTF.

A clear artwork brief answers a practical question: what exactly should be printed, at what size, and where? A design can look convincing in a phone preview while leaving production decisions unresolved. Use the following handover process before requesting DTF or UV DTF transfers.

Define the finished design before exporting

Write down the finished width and height, measurement unit and print position. If you need several sizes, name each version and give its quantity. Include a separate placement reference rather than expecting a mock-up to serve as the final artwork. Keep your editable original and identify one file as the version for approval.

Explain transparency, white and the background

Epson notes that transparent PNG files are typically used for DTFilm. Confirm the receiving printer's accepted formats instead of assuming that one export suits every workflow. Tell the printer whether a visible white rectangle is part of the design or simply a preview background.

For UV DTF, Roland describes preparing white and gloss layers in its production workflow. Agree who will prepare those layers. Do not add unfamiliar production settings merely because another supplier requested them for a different system.

Check the details that affect approval

  • Read every word, phone number and website address.
  • Check small text and narrow spaces at the intended printed size.
  • Mark any intentional transparent areas and white elements.
  • Identify the product material and background colour.
  • State whether the files show the design itself or a placement mock-up.
  • Ask the printer to confirm any mirroring or production-layer preparation before output.

Ask which file needs correction if the preview does not match your intention. Replacing a file silently can make an earlier proof ambiguous, so label revisions clearly and approve the current proof in writing.

Send a complete handover

Package the chosen artwork, finished dimensions, quantity, product photograph and placement note together. Agree whether the order covers transfers only or application as well. Review the relevant DTF transfer or UV DTF service brief. These steps make an enquiry easier to assess without pretending that every file is ready to print.
