UV DTF vs DTF: choosing a transfer for your product

Compare UV DTF and textile DTF by product surface, application and artwork brief. Use a practical checklist before requesting printing.

Two printing methods can share the letters DTF and still solve different problems. Start with the item you want to decorate: a garment and a rigid product need different conversations. This guide helps you prepare a useful brief rather than choose a method from its name alone.

The main difference is the application

In textile DTF, a design is printed on film, combined with a heat-activated powder and transferred onto fabric with a heat press. Mimaki explains this textile workflow. UV DTF instead uses UV-printed adhesive film to transfer a design onto an object, as described in Mimaki's UV-DTF overview. The two transfer types are not interchangeable.

Choose by the actual item

  • Shirt, uniform or fabric bag: discuss textile DTF and provide the fabric composition, colour and print position.
  • Rigid product or curved object: discuss UV DTF and identify the material, coating, shape and available decoration area.
  • Uncertain material: request a sample test before approving the full quantity.

A photograph is useful, but it does not replace the material description. Two products that look alike may have different finishes. Roland recommends testing UV-DTF application materials for adhesion and cleaning and drying the surface before application.

A short checklist before requesting a quote

  1. State the item and its material.
  2. Give the design's finished width and height, quantity and placement.
  3. Attach the artwork and mark which areas should remain unprinted.
  4. Describe how the item will be used and cleaned.
  5. Confirm whether you need transfers only or finished decorated items.
  6. Ask for a proof and agree the sample acceptance checks.

Do not approve an order solely because its quoted method sounds more advanced. Agree the finished result and care instructions first. No universal wash, outdoor-life or dishwasher guarantee follows from the words UV DTF or DTF.

For the next step, review the UV DTF service brief or the DTF transfer brief and submit the details relevant to your item.
